Brother-sister duo in Singapore Prison Service

Brother-sister duo DSP Chen Congyi and RO Chen Shuyi shed light on what it’s like working together in Singapore Prison Service (SPS) as we commemorate #InternationalSiblingsDay!
Before joining the SPS, the duo aspired to have careers that were meaningful and challenging, but were in jobs that proved to be unsatisfactory. After coming across a career advertisement about SPS in the newspaper, DSP Chen realized that working in SPS would help him realize his goal and decided to take the plunge before convincing his sister to do the same.
While it took DSP Chen two years to convince his sister to join SPS, his efforts proved to be worth it. "I told her, since you cannot find what you like, give Prisons a go! It will be worth the try!” DSP Chen recalled. Initially, RO Chen was skeptical as she felt that she lacked the qualities required to be a prison officer but seeing the satisfaction her brother derived from his job, she took a leap of faith and joined SPS as well.
When asked if she was given a choice to re-evaluate her decision, would she still choose to join SPS, RO Chen readily agreed.
“Definitely, I feel that the work we do is very meaningful, and it is more than just operations on the ground. We have meaningful interactions with inmates, and you may never know if a piece of advice that you have given to an inmate would change their lives one day.”
After working in SPS for a period of time, the siblings appreciate that they are able to rely on one another for support. “If [I] have an issue, I can actually go to him for advice. I am happy to have a familiar pillar of support at work” said RO Chen.
"Whenever I need to present designs on the email broadcast, I'll ask her to help me out during her free time as designing creatives is her forte”, he confesses with a smile. “But that being said, no confidential or privileged information is shared between us. It’s something that we are mindful about”, DSP Chen ensured.
Both DSP Chen and RO Chen are glad to be given the chance to work together in an organization that enforces the secure custody of inmates while providing rehabilitative opportunities at the same time.
"I’m glad to have my big brother working with me and grateful that we both have been given the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others.”
To all siblings out there, whether you work together or not, we wish you a Happy International Siblings Day!
